When violence erupts, Troy is left isolated, facing his deepest fears. In this unforgiving world, where survival means sacrificing trust and loyalty, Troy must choose between his past self and the person he is becoming. It's a powerful exploration of identity and the impact of one's surroundings.
The film stars an impressive cast, including Tut Nyuot, Vladyslav Baliuk, Sekou Diaby, Ryan Dean, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, and Stephen Graham. Sales are handled by Bankside, with producers Nick Love, Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor, and Tom Hawkins leading the charge.
In a heartfelt statement, Ashley Walters, an acting and music veteran, shared his experience stepping behind the camera for the first time. He said, "It felt both inevitable and deeply personal. I wanted to confront the experiences that shaped me—growing up as a young Black man in London, trying to understand manhood without positive role models, and feeling misunderstood by a system that labels boys before protecting them."
Walters continues, "I didn't want to create just another film defined by despair. Animol searches for humor, tenderness, and hope, because even in the darkest places, humanity survives. I'm honored to share this spirit with audiences at the Berlinale."
Animol is a collaborative effort between Film4 and Joi Productions, with Sky joining forces with Film4 as co-financiers for the first time, alongside the BFI.
