Imagine a community cut off from its nearest city for over six decades, relying solely on roads for travel. That’s been the reality for Portishead since its railway line to Bristol was shut down in 1964. But now, after years of debate and planning, the tracks are finally coming back to life.
In a move that’s both exciting and long overdue, Morgan Sindall has been given the green light to restore the 5.5km stretch of disused railway between Bristol and Portishead. This isn’t just about laying down tracks—it’s about reconnecting communities, boosting economic growth, and slashing travel times. Once completed, passengers will enjoy a direct, hourly train service from Portishead to Bristol Temple Meads in just 25 minutes. Talk about a game-changer!
But here’s where it gets controversial: The project, part of the £80 million Metrowest 1b Scheme, was initially awarded to VolkerFitzpatrick in 2023. So, why the switch to Morgan Sindall? While the details aren’t entirely clear, it’s likely tied to broader strategic decisions within the scheme. Either way, the focus now is on getting the job done.
Preparations are already in full swing. Last autumn, crews began clearing trees to make way for site compounds, car parks, and two new stations at Portishead and Pill. Utility diversions are currently underway, with temporary traffic lights popping up in Portishead—a small inconvenience for a much bigger payoff.
Rail Minister Lord Hendy couldn’t hide his enthusiasm: “Reopening this line has been a topic of discussion for decades, and thanks to government investment, we’re finally making it happen. Passengers who’ve been cut off for over 60 years will now have access to rail services, unlocking new opportunities and supporting jobs and growth in Portishead, Pill, and beyond.”
Marcus Jones, Network Rail’s Western Route Director, echoed the sentiment: “After years of hard work by countless individuals, we’re on the brink of bringing this railway back to life.”
And this is the part most people miss: While the project is undeniably a win for connectivity and sustainability, it also raises questions about why it took so long to revive this line.
