Palestine Action bans overturned—and the fight moves to appeal.
Palestine Action was prohibited under the Terrorism Act 2000 by then-Home Secretary Yvette Cooper last summer, turning membership in or any expression of support for the group into a criminal offence.
Since the proscription, thousands have been arrested, and many of these prosecutions are now up in the air.
The Metropolitan Police in London has stated that showing support for Palestine Action remains a criminal offence, but officers appear unlikely to arrest people at protests simply for backing the group.
Earlier this week, a panel of three High Court judges granted the Home Office permission to appeal the court’s decision. They also noted that the ruling quashing the ban is paused “pending determination of the defendant’s appeal to the Court of Appeal, or further order.”
As of now, no date has been set for the appeal.
