Breaking News: The Texas Rangers might be adding some serious firepower to their lineup! Despite the team's focus on pitching, whispers are circulating about a potential addition of a right-handed hitter, and the name on everyone's lips is Miguel Andújar, a former Rookie of the Year candidate who's just had a career-revival season.
Recently, reports surfaced that Rangers President of Baseball Operations Chris Young indicated the team felt good about their position players heading into the 2026 season, with pitching being the primary focus. However, the baseball world was taken by surprise when Jon Heyman of the New York Post linked the Rangers to Andújar, a free agent who could significantly bolster their offense.
Andújar, coming off a stellar 2025 season with impressive stats (.318 batting average, .822 OPS), is drawing considerable interest from multiple teams. The Rangers are reportedly in the mix, alongside the Padres, Cardinals, Reds, Cubs, and A's. This is a clear indication of the impact Andújar could bring to any team.
But here's where it gets interesting: Andújar, who will turn 31 in March, is coming off his best season since 2018. That year, he was a force to be reckoned with, posting a 2.8 bWAR and a .297/.328/.527 slash line (130 OPS+), hitting 27 home runs and driving in 92 runs. He finished second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting, just behind Shohei Ohtani. In 2025, Andújar started with the Athletics, showcasing his skills with a .298/.329/.436 slash line (111 OPS+) and hitting six home runs in 60 games. He was then traded to the Cincinnati Reds, where he truly shined, hitting .359/.400/.544 (153 OPS+) with four home runs in 34 games.
Andújar's versatility is another asset. He played at first and third base and both corner outfield positions in 2025. He demonstrated a knack for hitting right-handed pitchers, with a .290/.331/.429 average, while absolutely dominating southpaws, with a .389/.409/.578 slash line. This could be a perfect fit for the Rangers, who have a lineup predominantly filled with left-handed hitters like Corey Seager, Josh Smith, Brandon Nimmo, Wyatt Langford, and Joc Pederson. Adding Andújar could provide the much-needed balance to their lineup.
Before his breakout rookie season, Andújar had a brief stint in the big leagues in 2017, going 4-for-7 with two doubles and four RBI. During the 2018 playoffs, he went 2-for-10 with two walks. However, his career took a turn after 2018. He missed most of the 2019 season due to a right labrum tear, appearing in only 12 games. Injuries continued to plague him, limiting him to 21 games in 2020 and 45 in 2021. After playing 27 games with the Yankees in 2022, he was designated for assignment and claimed by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Andújar played in 9 games for the Pirates in 2022, followed by 30 games in 2023, where he slashed .250/.300/.476 (106 OPS+) with four homers and 18 RBI. The Athletics claimed him off waivers in the 2023-24 offseason, and he hit .285/.320/.337 (103 OPS+) in 75 games in 2024.
