Get ready, sushi lovers! Temaki, the beloved handroll sushi bar, is making a grand comeback, but with a twist. After bidding farewell to its Brixton location in 2025, Temaki is set to reopen its doors in the heart of Mayfair next month.
Founded in 2021 by Alexander Dupee, a former New York financier who traded Wall Street for the world of cuisine, Temaki drew inspiration from the vibrant handroll bars of California. It quickly gained a devoted following in Brixton, thanks in part to its accessible pricing – around £40 per person, a refreshing change in London's sushi scene.
But what exactly is Temaki? The name itself, derived from "te" (hand) and "maki" (roll), hints at its specialty. The menu features handroll sushi, Japanese-inspired small plates, and sandos. Handrolls offer a more casual, approachable take on sushi, where ingredients like fatty tuna belly, smoked eel, and prawn tempura are artfully combined with steamed rice and wrapped in nori (dried seaweed).
Temaki's Brixton menu was known for its premium offerings, including various cuts of tuna (akami, chutoro, and otoro), A4 wagyu sliders, and a curated selection of sakes.
The new Mayfair location promises an "elevated" experience, blending classic Japanese dishes with a relaxed Californian vibe, according to an official announcement.
Dupee, whose marriage to an internet personality made headlines in 2023, shared his excitement: "We loved our time in Brixton and with our new creative team we are so excited to build on that success in central London, on Mayfair’s Maddox Street. We’ve been working on some fun new dishes and will of course serve our signature handrolls — I can’t wait to open the doors."
The new site will span two floors. Upstairs, you'll find a more intimate dining room and an open kitchen, allowing you to witness the chefs' artistry. Downstairs, a 28-seat space inspired by Japan's listening bars will offer a unique ambiance.
The Crown Estate is partnering with Temaki. Sarah McLaren, leasing director, expressed her enthusiasm: "We are excited to welcome Temaki to the West End. It is a great example of a rapidly growing independent operator which is ready to establish itself in the heart of London. We are dedicated to supporting the hospitality industry by continuing to curate a portfolio of new, growing and established brands to cater to a diverse audience".
Here's the crucial detail: Temaki will open on Maddox Street in February 2026. The restaurant will be open daily for lunch from 12 pm to 3 pm and for dinner from 5 pm to 10 pm.
Now, here's a thought-provoking question: Do you think the higher-end Mayfair location will change Temaki's vibe? Will it still feel as accessible and welcoming as the Brixton original? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
