The Barn Theatre in Welwyn Garden City is set to stage a thought-provoking sci-fi drama, 'X', directed by Matthew Greenbank and opening on June 12. Personally, I think this production is a must-see for anyone interested in the intersection of science fiction and human psychology. What makes this particularly fascinating is how it challenges audiences with powerful existential themes, leaving them with more questions than answers. In my opinion, this is a rare opportunity to explore the human psyche under extreme conditions and examine the value of science and the state of our planet. The play, originally premiered at the Royal Court in 2016, follows a group of researchers stranded on Pluto, where they grapple with leadership issues, the value of science, and the impact of human actions on the environment. From my perspective, the setting of the play, a futuristic interior reminiscent of 'Dr. Who' or 'Alien' movies, adds an extra layer of ambiguity and mystery, inviting the audience to question the reality outside the porthole or up the ladder in the bulkhead. The cast brings this futuristic drama to life on stage, with each character offering a unique perspective on the narrative. Ray, played by Paull Russell, grapples with leadership issues, while Cole, portrayed by Dylan Huber, prompts the audience to question the value of science. Clark, played by Ben Merry, carries the heavy memories of Earth's ruined ecosystem, and Mattie, played by Calypso Powell, brings a special tenderness to questions of community and care. Gilda, played by Jessica Drucker, the closest the play has to a central character, holds the play together with her interactions with the other team members. What many people don't realize is that the play is also rooted in the tradition of 20th-century avant-garde theatre, particularly the plays of Samuel Beckett. This adds an extra layer of depth to the production, inviting audiences to reflect on the human condition and the nature of existence. Matthew Greenbank, who was 'blown away' when he first saw the play in 2016, is keen to provide audiences at the Barn with material that requires a tolerance for ambiguity and an openness to discussion. He explained that each member of the cast has their own interpretation of the play's meaning and narrative structure. This raises a deeper question: how do we interpret and engage with ambiguous art? In my view, this is what makes 'X' such a compelling and thought-provoking production. The play will run from June 12 to June 20, with evening performances at 8pm, and a matinee on June 20 at 2.30pm. Tickets can be purchased from the Barn Theatre box office on 01707 324300 or online at barntheatre.co.uk for £16. Please note, the play contains strong language and themes of psychological distress which may be upsetting to some people. However, I encourage everyone to give it a go and experience the power of theatre to challenge and inspire. If you take a step back and think about it, the Barn Theatre's production of 'X' is a testament to the enduring appeal of science fiction and its ability to explore the human condition in new and thought-provoking ways. What this really suggests is that theatre has the power to transport us to other worlds, both physically and metaphorically, and to challenge us to think more deeply about our own.
